West Pointers Now Make Dainty Village Their Headquarters on Midway

Buffalo Evening News, August 23, 1901

About the greatest contracts in costumes and in characters to be seen anywhere on the Midway can always be found in Fair Japan, that dainty little village just a hundred feet from the main entrance to the Midway. The easy life of the East and the rigid discipline of the West come into contact daily there since the cadets from West Point have been at the Exposition.

The West Pointers have made Fair Japan their headquarters while off duty and at any hour when they are not drilling a dozen or more of the prim, bright-looking young soldiers can be seen about the Japanese village. Their tight-fitting, martial uniforms contrast greatly with the loose, flowing robes of the little Japs, almost as much as the tall, straight, reserved wearers of the cadet gray differ from the energetic little men of the East with their rapid fire, hit-or-miss English and their quick movements.

Fair Japan is filled with quiet nooks and corners, neat little bowers and cosy resting places. for those who wish entertainment there is always something going on in the theater, acrobatic exhibitions, juggling, dancing or some other entertainment, all clean and all of a class far above some Midway attractions.

A true representation of the home life of the Japanese and their best methods of entertainment is shown. The village has been visited by great crowds lately. The West Pointers, though they do not know it, maybe form an additional attraction that few people can resist.
