Cupid Invades Fair Japan

Buffalo Evening News, August 26, 1901

The public betrothal of P. Hirata, a clerk in one of the booths at Fair Japan to Miss O. Kane Sam, a Geisha girl, was celebrated at the Japanese Village on the Midway Saturday night. The ceremony was performed on the stage of the Japanese theater just as it is done in Japan. It was a pretty affair.

Preceded by a number of their countrymen, the young couple marched on the stage and the ceremony began. Hirata wore a handsome blue robe, called a kamishimo, which was embroidered in gold and white. Miss Sam;s uzhika, or engagement dress, was of bright scarlet with an overdress of flimsy gold and white stuff, elaborate in make-up and coloring. From the stage, the engagement was publicly announced. Many visitors to the village watched the ceremony with curiosity and interest.

Hirata met Miss Sam at the Exposition and their love was at first sight. They may be married at the Japanese Village. If so, the ceremony will be even more interesting than the betrothal.
