The jinrikisha was part of the exhibit but operated outside of the exhibit
as part of the Exposition transportation.

The Exposition also provided human-powered roller chair service on the grounds
for those who could not
traverse the mile-long grounds or who grew tired half-way through the sightseeing
day. But the jinrikisha
conveyance, shown here as it existed in Japan and other Asian countries, was
regarded by some as a
humiliating practice that perpetuated class distinctions. Here is a 1902 news
