"Detail of the Dewey Triumphal Arch, New York
City "
Karl Bitter
The Dewey Triumphal Arch was originally
located at 5th Avenue and Madison Square in New York City.
Constructed in 1899 staff (the same material used in the Exposition buildings),
it was an arch modeled
from the Arch of Titus in Rome and featured sculptural items by 27 sculptors.
Above is a detail of
Karl Bitter's contribution which was featured in the photograph exhibited
on the Scultpure Gallery wall.
The arch was sent to Charleston, South Carolina, for their
1902 Exposition, where it was lost. A photograph
of the entire arch can be found on this page: http://www.mcny.org/byron/GCAphysical.htm
