Pan-American Stamps on Sale

Buffalo Evening News May 1, 1901

The sale of the Pan-American postage stamps began at the main post office this morning with a great rush. Before the retail windows were opened, there was a line of purchasers which extended way down the corridor, and each one of them had evidently come early to be able to get the first Pan-American stamps sold.

The man who did get the first of the new issue sold from the stamp window was George C. Foose, the Federal building watchman, who was first on the scene. He acquired a whole set.

The congestion was soon relieved, but the sales continue heavy, and the clerks at the two retail windows will have their hands full all day.

There were some rather amusing incidents, as numbers of people who hadn't heard of the new issue, seemed to harbor the horrid suspicion that Uncle Sam was trying to sell bogus stamps right from his own office windows, and several customers actually refused to accept the Pan-American stamps and went away without buying.

General comment upon the appearance of the new stamps was favorable, but many liked best the 1-cent denomination for its design and coloring. The Pan-American stamps are on sale at all of the postal stations.
