Dr. William Pepper
Karl Bitter

Karl Bitter was a major figure in American sculpture in 1901 and was in charge of all of the decorative sculpture for the Pan-American Exposition grounds. He exhibited two examples of his work as part of the Art Building exhibit. He created the statue of Dr. William Pepper in 1896-97, shortly after Dr. Pepper retired from his illustrious career as Provost of the Univerisity of Pennsylvania. A bronze casting of the statue stands on the University of Pennsylvania campus today outside the University's Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.
